The Magic Train Year: 1

The transport theme provides are a full day of ICT related activities for Year 1. Children are given an introduction to modelling. They create their own fantasy situation based on traditional tales - with a twist. Finally, we use the story to create a pictogram, which represents the information graphically.

Fishing for treasure Year: 2

This full day ICT session is for Year 2 children. There is a under water theme to the day. The activities cover some drawing, writing and controlling a floor turtle. They will create their own treasure finding story. Finally we use the Roamer to catch some fish.

Modelling effects on screen Year: 2,3 or 4

Pupils will engage in a range of activities that lead to a multi-media presentation about their own primary school. They will become involved in pod-casting and sound recording and use the software packages "Garageband" and "Comic Life". In order to make this a successful and productive day, schools will need to undertake preparation in advance of the visit. The class teacher must;

- Supply some digital photos and text (not paper-based) about a variety of activities that give a positive impression of the school.
- Supply computerised information about after school clubs, school trips, shows and any other important things that have happened in the school calendar.

Jungle, Jingle, Jangle (E-mail, stories and music composition) Year: 3

A jungle theme is used in a full day of ICT activities for Year 3. The children create a jungle soundscape using music composition. They use e-mail to contact others to appraise their jungle music compositions. The explorer goes missing from the jungle. Is the explorer hurt... eaten... lost? Pupils become super heroes, within "Comic Life" software, in a rescue mission.

World War 2 with Caspian software Year: 3 or 4

The children will learn about the reasons for the war, the personalities of Hitler and Churchill and "the Blitz". The knowledge gained will be re-enforced by playing, a "Caspian Learning" computer game which has been created to enhance children's learning

2Animate Software Year: 3 or 4

2Animate software allows young children to draw their own pictures and animate them. Pupils draw or capture images and then click on play and watch their animations. This session teaches drawing processes, sequencing, cause and effect as they add, remove and copy frames.

Introduction to Spreadsheets Year: 3,4 or 5

Pupils will learn about spreadsheets in easy steps. There is a gradual progression from 'row, column and cell' to the use of basic formulae. The session makes use of stories where objects are hidden in cell references, interactive learning activities where the key concepts of spreadsheets are stressed and the 'times tables' to allow the introduction of simple formula.

World War 2 Animation using: I Can Animate Year: 4

A half-day session in which pupils will focus on the principles of animation and use the 'I Can Animate' software, to create their own film. This will result in pupils creating 2D animation based on the Second World War and focusing on "the Blitz". Pupils will work either individually or in pairs and use Apple Mac computers

Changing Solids, Liquids and Gases with Caspian software Year: 4

In this session children will learn about the differences between solids, liquids and gases by using Caspian games based learning tools. They will examine freezing and melting temperatures, separating solids and water and changes that occur when solids and liquids are mixed.

The Tudors with Caspian software Year: 4

Unit 8: What were the differences between the lives of rich and poor people in Tudor times? In this session children will learn about the lives of rich and poor people living in Tudor times. The knowledge gained will be re-enforced by playing, a "Caspian Learning" computer game, which has been created to enhance children's learning.

Design a Film Poster Using Photoshop: Greek Poster (Year groups 4, 5 or 6) Year: 4,5 or 6

Pupils are asked to design a film poster using Photoshop. The title of the film is based on the theme of Greek Myths and Legends. This session can be adapted to accommodate Year 4 pupils and involves exploring the use of colour as well as manipulating text and graphics.

Creative Writing: George and the Dragon Year: 4,5 or 6

Pupils will be introduced to Kar2ouche software specifically designed to develop their thinking skills, practical ability in structuring a narrative and applying descriptive techniques. Stories will be turned into multi-media presentations where pupils add voice-overs and sound effects, allowing the performance aspect of creative writing to be explored.

Exploring Digital Music - Jonni Starr - Episode 1 Year: 4,5 or 6

This full day session aims to introduce pupils to some of the basic principles of music by using ‘state-of-the-art’ ICT equipment and software including Music Ace and Logic. Pupils will be asked to complete a number of tasks in order to create a soundtrack for an animated film about the action hero Jonni Starr.

Digital Music with Garageband Year: 4,5 or 6

This full day activity is for pupils who have experienced Digital Music Stage 1. In the morning pupils will use Garageband digital music software to create the soundtrack of a 'Space Shuttlel' film. In the afternoon they will edit their sound track and match it to the film using iMovie digital video software. A DVD with a compilation of the work done will be provided for the school.

Vikings with Kar2ouche Year: 4,5 or 6

Pupils will learn about the life of the Vikings and their folklore. They will weave a friendship band in the same way that the Vikings made ropes and braids. They will use Kar2ouche to storyboard the Viking homeland, sea journeys, raids and burials

Romans with Kar2ouche Year: 4,5 or 6

Pupils will explore the Roman invasion and settlement. Using Kar2ouche textboxes, thought-bubbles and a variety of backgrounds, pupils can experience the every-day life of Romans living in Britain. They will produce multi-media storyboards reflecting what they have learnt.

Control Technology (Introduction) using Junior Control Insight Year: 4,5 or 6.

Pupils will be introduced to control technology using Junior Control Insight software. They will become familiar with computer control terminology and have hands-on experience of controlling both on-screen simulations and physical models such as clowns and traffic lights.

Henry VIII with Caspian software Year: 5

In this session the children will learn about Henry's wives as well as finding out about the interests and capabilities of Henry himself. The knowledge gained will be re-enforced by playing, a "Caspian Learning" computer game which has been created to enhance children's learning.

Earth, Sun and Moon with Caspian software Year: 5 or 6

To promote understanding of the size of the Solar System and relationship of its planets with a practical exercise and then using appropriate websites investigate distances between, orbits, gravities, composition and colours of the planets. The knowledge gained will be re-enforced by playing, a "Caspian Learning" computer game, which has been created to enhance children's learning. (QCA Science Unit 5E).

Introduction to French Year: 5 or 6

This full day activity uses interactive software for greetings, numbers and the weather. Pupils, using green screen technology, will produce a podcast for learning numbers from 1 to 10 in French.

Romans Web-site Year: 5 or 6

Pupils will create a web-site using Mediator web-design software using text and picture content based on the Roman invasion and settlement. They will watch in amazement as their soldier marches along Hadrian’s Wall. The class teacher may wish to prepare a paragraph of text about Roman soldiers, with the children, in advance of their visit.

Roald Dahl's "Matilda" and Photoshop Year: 5 or 6

Using the work of Roald Dahl as a stimulus, pupils will explore the concept of characterisation by analysing key descriptions of the evil teacher, Miss Trunchbull. Pupils will apply Photoshop distortion tools to their own photographs to create comical versions of their very own scary teacher. Then pupils will create a 'Wanted' poster, adding their own text and graphical effects.

Exploring Haiku Poetry Using Knowledgebox (Year groups 5 or 6) Year: 5 or 6

Knowledgebox is a digital learning system providing multimedia content. This session uses the interactive software to explore rhythm in poetry. Pupils will create their own Haiku poem about winter.

Kahootz 3D Worlds including Animation Year: 5 or 6

Kahootz is a powerful set of 3D multimedia tools developed by the Australian Children's Television Foundation, which allows pupils to explore 3D worlds. Pupils will be introduced to the basic principles of 3D animation by creating their own environments using backgrounds, characters and objects.

World War 2 using Digital Imaging and Animation Year: 5 or 6

The pupils will use Photoshop techniques to add their face to a photograph, taken during the Second World War, of evacuated children boarding a steam train.

The Heart & Circulation System using Virtual Reality Year: 5 or 6

An easy to use but brilliantly simple loop based program that is suitable for key stages 2 and 3. This can also be used to record live instruments and voices as well as MIDI. There is a wide range of loops available in a variety of styles so that projects can be based around particular areas of study (e.g. dance, jazz, blues, reggae, world, symphonic and film music)

Seasonal Animation Year: 5 or 6

Depending on the time of year, pupils will create 2D animation using Apple Mac computers and "I Can Animate software". They will have the opportunity to explore the software and create a series of short practice animations before producing a final movie based on one of the following themes: Halloween (Haunted House), Christmas, Easter or The Summer Holidays.

Control Technology (Advanced) using Junior Control Insight Year: 5 or 6.

Classes who have experienced Junior Control can further develop their understanding and skill in control technology by exploring how a sensor input such as a pressure pad can be used to control a clown's eyes. Pupils will be challenged to complete other tasks with simulations of a "dream bedroom" and a "haunted house".

CAD/CAM (Computer Aided Design & Manufacture) Year: 5 or 6.

This full day session allows pupils to design using 2D and 3D Design software. 2D CAD software is used to design a personalised outline for a key ring tag. Design work for a logo and name can be modelled in 3D using Prodesktop this enables high quality visual images to be created and printed. The individually designed products can be produced from various materials using a Laser CAM cutter.

Lego Nxt Robotics Year: 5 or 6.

During a full day session pupils will learn to program robotic devices using Lego Nxt Mindstorm software. Pupils will be taught how to build instructions into programs which enable the robots to carry out routines and manoeuvres, such as, following a black line, reversing to avoid an obstacle and changing direction in response to a sound. This technology also demonstrates to pupils the control concept of feedback as they constantly strive to improve the designs of their programs.

Data Logging Year: 5 or 6.

LogIT Explorer is a hand-held data-logger that includes built-in temperature, sound and light sensors. The Explorer records data either remotely from the computer or (when linked to the computer) as a "live" graph or table on the computer screen. During this activity pupils will log the sounds of a simulated football match, monitor light levels through different materials to help Dracula choose curtains and record temperature data around the CLC to optimise the positioning of heat-sensitive plants. The data is transferred to the computer and children will interpret the resulting graphs.

Masks and Faces Year: 6

Revelation Natural Art is a brand new drawing program, which pupils will use to learn about facial proportions and features. Pupils have the opportunity to make colourful, funky faces. After research into body adornment and masks from around the world, pupils will create their own multi-cultural portrait. Imaginative and fun this full day activity links to scheme of work unit "What a performance".

Making Landscapes Year: 6

Using examples of the work of artists as stimulus, pupils will explore the theme of Landscapes. They will use Revelation Natural Art software together with short inspirational activities to create their own imaginary places. The composition and depth aspects of the work will be investigated. Literacy: The Harry Potter Extravaganza Year: 6

Listen and watch as Harry Potter, Snape and Hagrid ask you to rescue Dumbledore by flying over mountains and rivers in search of magical objects. Pupils will create a new professor with amazing powers to help them in their quest

Listen, Record and Control. Year: Reception

This half-day activity is for Reception age children to use remote control and to look at the use of sensors. They will be able to record their progress using a microphone and a digital camera. This is also an opportunity for teachers and other adults to assess the children’s early learning goals. (This visit requires a ratio of 1 adult to 6 children)
